Out With the Old: Making Way for New Our Timber Frame Model Home: Part 5

Our timber frame model home project has been an exciting journey to document — from the initial planning stages to the garage renovation, every step has brought us closer to something truly special. Now, it’s time to share the next big chapter: the demolition of the existing log home.

It’s not every day you hear about homeowners choosing to tear down a log home, but in this case, it made sense. The existing log home, while once full of charm, had grown dated over the years. It needed a new roof, new doors and windows, updated cabinetry, fresh flooring — and more. Rather than continuing to patch and repair, the homeowners decided to start fresh and build the forever home they’d always envisioned.

Now empty nesters, their new space was designed with the future in mind — moving the main living areas to one level and incorporating thoughtful accommodations for aging parents who may need assistance in the years to come.

The property itself is a dream location. The homeowners love their incredible view, and the site already had everything in place — a driveway, utilities, and a solid foundation for what’s to come. All the reasons it made sense to stay at this location, demolish the existing log home and build a new timber frame home in its place.

When demolition day arrived, the process was thoughtful and deliberate. Several interior doors and cabinetry pieces were upcycled, and all the glass from windows and doors was removed before the major teardown began. The crew took down the log home piece by piece, salvaging what could be reused. A few exposed beams and the existing great room fireplace — which will be featured in the new dining room — were carefully preserved.

In the end, the log home was leveled all the way down to the foundation. Watching it come down was bittersweet — a home full of memories giving way to something new. But knowing that a beautiful timber frame home will soon rise in its place made it a moment filled with both nostalgia and excitement.
